Veteran Needs Help Fast
by Kenny
(Wichita, KS )
This veteran needs help fast. I was wounded in '06 and again in '08. I am out of the Army now, with an honorable discharge.
No job will hire me -- I'm told I'm a high risk, due to all the braces I must wear.
Without working, my bills are more than my disability check I get from the VA. Plus, I'm a single father to a one-year-old whose mother has passed.
I'm having hard time paying my bills, always picking which ones I can each month and about to lose my vehicle due to that.
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.
Kenny, I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles. This economy is tough for so many.
First, let me thank you for your service to our country.
Have you requested assistance from the VA with your job search? They should have a program to assist you in finding employment.
If you're being told you are ineligible for jobs because of your injuries or resulting disabilities, those employers may be violating federal anti-discrimination laws. Talk to the jobs counselor at your local VA center about that.
Also contact Lawyers Serving Warriors, a national network of volunteer lawyers serving OIF/OEF veterans with various issues.
You can download a free copy of The American Veterans and Service Members Survival Guide from their resources page.
Also, try your STATE office of veterans affairs. I think every state has one, and they usually have counselors available to assist you with your search for employment. They may even have a list of employers who are hiring veterans.
Both of those offices should have a list of available local resources that may be able to assist you with your financial hardship.
You might also try the following programs:

I'm sure there are other programs out there that may be able to offer assistance, so I'll ask our readers to let us know about them by clicking below, where it says, "Click here to add your own comments."
Thanks again for your service. Please stay in touch and let us know where you find help, so we can thank them, too.
Best wishes,
Janet
